Assessing Arguments

Hughes in Critical Thinking  presents these seven steps for assessing arguments.
(Hughes, 2000, pp. 117-119)

Name Action
Conclusion Identify the main conclusion, add missing conclusions.
Premises Identify the premises, add missing premises.
Structure Identify the structure of the argument, diagram as needed.
Acceptability Check the acceptability of the premises.
Relevance Check the relevance of the premises.
Adequacy Check the adequacy of the premises.
Counter-arguments Look for counter-arguments.
